— Seven Bowls of Wrath, Continued

The seven plagues, or seven bowls of wrath, descend upon the earth in rapid succession. Each bowl is poured out by a specific angel who is commanded by “a loud voice from the temple” to pour out the “wrath of God” on the earth.

The first bowl of wrath. The “loud voice” is not of an angel but appears to be the voice of God, as shown in Revelation 15:8, since no one—and that would include angels at this point—can enter the temple of the Lord. This is the same voice heard in Revelation 16:17. When the first bowl of wrath is poured out on the earth, “a loathsome and malignant sore” comes upon all those who have aligned themselves with the beast by taking his mark and worshipping his image. The sores are ulcers, cancerous lesions, or suppurated wounds that infect everyone on earth except the righteous. Such running, puss-like ailments seem similar to other sores described in Scripture. The descriptions imply painful or agonizing ulcers that resist healing.

OCCUPY TILL I COME: This section is titled, “Occupy Until I Come!” (Part 22) based on the parable of the nobleman who went away and left talents for his servants to use in his absence. J.C. Ryle writes:

I say nothing as to the time when these things shall take place. I object, on principle, to all dogmatism about dates. All I insist upon is this — that there is a great change before us all — a change for the earth, a change for man, and above all, a change for the saints.

— Seven Bowls of Wrath

There are obvious parallels between the trumpet judgments and the bowl judgments. We have already observed these in chapter 6. The basic similarities have to do with the objects of each of the first six judgments (earth, sea, rivers, sun, darkness, Euphrates River). In both cases, the seventh judgment involves a voice announcing the finality of the judgment, followed by lightning, thunder, hail, and an earthquake.

OCCUPY TILL I COME: This section is titled, “Occupy Until I Come!” (Part 21) based on the parable of the nobleman who went away and left talents for his servants to use in his absence. J.C. Ryle writes:

There is a great change yet to come on this world, and a change we ought to keep constantly before our mind’s eye.

That change is a change of masters. That old rebel, the devil, and all his adherents, shall be cast down. The Lord Jesus, and all His saints, shall be exalted and raised to honor. “The kingdoms of this world” shall “become the kingdoms of our Lord and of His Christ.”

— The Grapes of Wrath, Continued…

The “wine press of the wrath of God” symbolizes the severity of this judgment. Its location is “without [outside] the city,” indicating that the last great conflict will be near, but not in, Jerusalem. In Revelation 16:16, John will locate the final battle at Armageddon, some fifty miles northwest of Jerusalem.

The Old Testament prophets also predicted the final battle in the Valley of Jehoshaphat, which is adjacent to Jerusalem and the Kidron Valley. The combined biblical picture of the final conflict portrays a massive invasion of Israel by the forces of the Antichrist. The invading army will overrun the nation from the north and the south all the way to the outskirts of Jerusalem.

This section is titled, “Occupy Until I Come!” (Part 11) based on the parable of the nobleman who went away and left talents for his servants to use in his absence in Luke 19:11-13. J.C. Ryle writes:

When, how, where, in what manner, all these things shall be — we cannot say particularly! Enough for us to know that they shall be. The Lord Jesus has undertaken to do them — and they shall be performed: the Lord Jesus waits for the time appointed by the Father — and then they shall all come to pass. As surely as He was born of a pure virgin, and lived on earth thirty three years as a servant — so surely He shall come with clouds in glory, and reign on the earth as a king.

— The Grapes of Wrath

A white cloud catches John’s eye next. It is the messianic cloud associated with the return of Christ. The reference to “a son of man” with a golden crown assures us this is the Christ. Here, Jesus is pictured as the Judge of the unbelieving world. He is the “Grim Reaper” at the final judgment.

The imagery of the harvest and the vintage is taken from Joel 3:13, which pictures the future judgment as a harvest. Again, these verses serve as an overview (proleptic summary) of what follows in great detail in chapters 15-19. Christ begins His descent to earth on the white cloud, sickle in hand. He is pictured as the Lord of the harvest, emphasizing that all judgment is under His sovereign dispensation.

OCCUPY TILL I COME: We are continuing our journey through the book, “Coming Events and Present Duties,” by J.C. Ryle. This section is titled, “Occupy Until I Come!” (Part 10) based on the parable of the nobleman who went away and left talents for his servants to use in his absence in Luke 19:11-13. J.C. Ryle writes:

Just as the Lord Jesus, like the nobleman, “went to receive a kingdom,” so, like the nobleman, the Lord Jesus intends one day “to return.”

The words of the angels in Acts 1 shall have a complete fulfillment: “This same Jesus who was taken up from you into Heaven, shall so come in like manner as you have seen Him go into Heaven.” As His going away was a real literal going away — so His return shall be a real literal return. As He came personally the first time with a body — so He shall come personally the second time with a body. As He came visibly to this earth and visibly went away — so when He comes the second time He shall visibly return. And then, and not until then, the complete kingdom of Christ shall begin. He left His servants as “a nobleman,” He returns to His servants as “a King.”

The messages of the three angels are followed by a comment about the “perseverance of the saints” and a voice from heaven commanding John to write. It is difficult to tell who speaks in Rev. 14:12, but it appears to be a spontaneous and unsolicited remark by John himself, although it could be part of the third angel’s message. The comment involves a threefold observation regarding:

1. The perseverance of the saints
2. Those who keep the commandments of God
3. Those who have their faith in Jesus

OCCUPY TILL I COME: We are continuing our journey through the book, “Coming Events and Present Duties,” by J.C. Ryle. This section is titled, “Occupy Until I Come!” (Part 9) based on the parable of the nobleman who went away and left talents for his servants to use in his absence in Luke 19:11-13. J.C. Ryle writes:

The Lord Jesus during the present dispensation is like David between the time of His anointing and Saul’s death. He has the promise of the kingdom — but He has not yet received the crown and throne.

He is followed by a few, and those often neither great nor wise — but they are a faithful people. He is persecuted by His enemies, and ofttimes driven into the wilderness — and yet His party is never quite destroyed. But He has none of the visible signs of the kingdom at present — no earthly glory, majesty, greatness, obedience. The vast majority of mankind see no beauty in Him — they will not have this man to reign over them. His people are not honored for their Master’s sake: they walk the earth like princes in disguise. His kingdom is not yet come — His will is not yet done on earth excepting by a little flock. It is not the day of “His power.” The Lord Jesus is biding His time.

The third angel says, “The wrath of God is mixed in full strength”

A third angel flies across the prophetic landscape announcing the doom of all who follow the beast and receive his mark. Just as “Babylon” made all nations to drink of the “wine of her immorality”, so God will make the beast worshipers drink of the “wine of the wrath of God”. His final judgments are pictured as “mixed in full strength” (undiluted or not watered-down) into the “cup of His anger.”

This section is titled, “Occupy Until I Come!” (Part 8) based on the parable of the nobleman who went away and left talents for his servants to use in his absence in Luke 19:11-13. J.C. Ryle writes:

The second question I wish to consider is this — what is the present position of our Lord Jesus Christ?

The parable appears to me to answer that question distinctly in the twelfth verse. “A certain nobleman went into a far country to receive for himself a kingdom and to return.” This nobleman represents the Lord Jesus Christ, and that in two respects.

Three angels fly across the sky, one after another, making dramatic and climactic announcements. These are followed by a fourth announcement from heaven itself. Each of these is a proleptic remark. Each serves as a summary statement (preview) of what is to follow.

The second angel says, “Fallen, fallen, is Babylon the great”.

The view that over-literalizes “Babylon” in the Revelation passages misses the obvious symbolism that is intended there. Even Robert Thomas admits, “The writer is very clear to point out when he intends a figurative meaning.” That is exactly what John the revelator does in 17:5-9! He plainly tells us that the “Babylon” of the Apocalypse is a symbolic name for Rome. He calls it “mystery, Babylon”. It is drunk with the blood of the “witnesses of Jesus”. Its seven heads are “seven mountains” on which the city sits—an obvious reference to Rome. Finally, he calls it “the great city, which reigns over the kings of the earth”. How much more clearly can he state it?

This section is titled, “Occupy Until I Come!” (Part 7) based on the parable of the nobleman who went away and left talents for his servants to use in his absence in Luke 19:11-13. J.C. Ryle writes:

It is high time for Christians to interpret unfulfilled prophecy by the light of prophecies already fulfilled. The curses on the Jews were brought to pass literally — so also will be the blessings. The scattering was literal — so also will be the gathering. The pulling down of Zion was literal — so also will be the building up. The rejection of Israel was literal — so also will be the restoration.
