Threat of Nuclear War; Earthquake in Mexico (Second Coming Watch Update #869)

Daniel Whyte III

First, under the Sign category of DISTRESS AMONG NATIONS — According to the Associated Press, U.N. Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has warned the world’s leaders that the threat of a nuclear attack is at its highest level since the end of the Cold War and that “fiery talk can lead to fatal misunderstandings.” In his first state-of-the-world report since taking the reins of the United Nations on January 1, Guterres put “nuclear peril” as the leading threat, warning that “we must not sleepwalk our way into war.” The U.N. chief told the General Assembly’s annual ministerial meeting that millions are living in fear “under a shadow of dread cast by the provocative nuclear and missile tests” of North Korea.

Second, today, under the Sign category of EARTHQUAKES IN DIVERS PLACES — According to CNN, Rescue workers are continuing to search for dozens of people feared buried in Mexico City among hundreds of buildings destroyed by the country’s most lethal earthquake in a generation. The magnitude 7.1 quake on Tuesday killed at least 217 people, nearly half of them in the capital, 32 years to the day after a devastating 1985 quake. The disaster came as Mexico was still reeling from a powerful tremor that killed nearly 100 people in the south of the country less than two weeks ago.

Third, today, under the Sign category of THE TURMOIL IN ISRAEL & THE MIDDLE EAST — According to The Washington Post, Israel has flexed its military muscles in recent months as the regional balance of power has pitched further in favor of its most bitter adversaries — Iran and its Lebanese proxy Hezbollah. Analysts and former senior Israeli military officers say Israel is showing that it will act with force to protect its interests, while using just enough of it to limit its enemies without sparking a war. But it’s a precarious line to tread, and even a small misstep could lead to conflict. Israel is scrambling to adjust as Syrian President Bashar Assad has taken the upper hand in his country’s six-year war, propped up by an emboldened Iran and an array of Shiite militias, including Hezbollah, which has sent thousands of fighters to back him. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu publicly criticized a U.S.-Russia cease-fire deal in southern Syria for not including provisions to stop Iranian expansion. Meanwhile, Israel is making its presence felt. Last week Israeli jets buzzed so low over southern Lebanon that they shattered windows and caused panic. That followed the bombing of a military site in Syria earlier in the month that had been linked to missile production for Hezbollah. And, on Tuesday, the army used a Patriot missile to shoot down a drone that neared its airspace.

Fourth, today, under the Sign category of INCREASED NATURAL DISASTERS — According to The Washington Post, after mauling Puerto Rico, Hurricane Maria delivered a punishing blow to the Dominican Republic with winds near 115 mph and driving rains as the storm carved an arc of misery through the Caribbean. Maria — now a Category 3 hurricane — was expected to gather some fresh strength over open water before taking aim at the Turks and Caicos Islands, which were battered earlier this month by Hurricane Irma on its deadly path toward Florida. Seven deaths have been blamed on Maria, an entire island is without power, and the mass of devastation it leaves behind will further compound already strained relief efforts in the region.

Fifth, today, under the Sign category of WARS & RUMORS OF WARS — According to the Associated Press, North Korean leader Kim Jong Un lobbed a string of insults at President Donald Trump on Friday in a speech during which he also hinted at a frightening new weapon test. It was the first time for a North Korean leader to issue such a direct statement against a U.S. president, dramatically escalating the war of words between the former wartime foes and raising the international nuclear standoff to a new level. Kim said his country will consider the “highest level of hard-line countermeasures in history,” a possible indication of more powerful weapons tests on the horizon. His foreign minister, when asked during a visit to the U.N. General Assembly what the countermeasure would be, said his country may test a hydrogen bomb in the Pacific Ocean.

The prophetic passage of Scripture that we are looking at today is Jeremiah 31:15-22 which reads in part: “Thus saith the Lord; A voice was heard in Ramah, lamentation, and bitter weeping; Rachel weeping for her children refused to be comforted for her children, because they were not.”

Allow me to share with you some commentary on this passage from the Popular Bible Prophecy Commentary, edited by Tim LaHaye and Ed Hindson.

This passage concludes with a call to repentance. Verse 21 begins with a plea to return to the ancient paths: “Set up for yourself roadmarks, place for yourself guideposts; direct your mind to the highway, the way by which you went.” God calls upon Israel to “return, O virgin of Israel”—to be repentant, to be converted. God continues, “How long will you go here and there, O faithless daughter?” In Hosea 1-3, the prophet Hosea speaks of Israel as a divorced wife returning to her husband. Jeremiah 2:20 speaks of Israel as playing the prostitute, and Jeremiah 3:1-10 points out that Israel was divorced by God because of her prostitution. In Hosea 2:19-20, Israel has yet to return to her husband, which will prove to be “a new thing in the earth—a woman will encompass a man.” The promise is that the weak female will embrace the strong male. Israel, the wife of Jehovah, will embrace the Lord, her strong Husband, and they will have a reunion someday.

If the Lord tarries His Coming and we live, we will continue looking at the prophetic passages of the Bible in our next broadcast / podcast.

Our Second Coming quote for today is from Billy Graham. He said, “Bible teaching about the Second Coming of Christ used to be thought of as ‘doomsday’ preaching. But not anymore. It is the only ray of hope that shines as an ever brightening beam in a darkening world.”

Let’s Pray

***

If you are not ready for the return of Jesus Christ, may I encourage you to get ready today by receiving Him as your Savior. Here is how.

First, accept the fact that you are a sinner, and that you have broken God’s law. The Bible says in Romans 3:23: “For all have sinned and come short of the glory of God.”

Second, accept the fact that there is a penalty for sin. The Bible states in Romans 6:23: “For the wages of sin is death…”

Third, accept the fact that you are on the road to hell. Jesus Christ said in Matthew 10:28: “And fear not them which kill the body, but are not able to kill the soul: but rather fear him which is able to destroy both soul and body in hell.” Also, the Bible states in Revelation 21:8: “But the fearful, and unbelieving, and the abominable, and murderers, and whoremongers and sorcerers, and idolaters, and all liars, shall have their part in the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone: which is the second death.”

Now that is bad news, but here is the good news. Jesus Christ said in John 3:16: “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.”

Just believe in your heart that Jesus Christ died for your sins, was buried, and rose from the dead by the power of God for you so that you can live eternally with Him. Pray and ask Him to come into your heart today, and He will. Romans 10:13 says, “For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.”

Keep looking up for your redemption draweth nigh. Let us join in the prayer of John the Revelator — “Even so, come, Lord Jesus.” God bless you.

Breaking Prophecy News; Battle of Armageddon, Part 3 (The Prophet Daniel’s Report #628)

Daniel Whyte III

Daniel Whyte III

Looking at world events through the lens of the Word of God, let’s look at some headlines from today’s news that point to the second coming of the Lord Jesus Christ.

First, today, under the Sign category of WARS & RUMORS OF WARS — According to The Washington Post, North Korea’s military conducted huge live-fire drills on Tuesday and issued new warnings that it would defend itself against the “American imperialists,” amid high tensions and a military buildup in the region. But the United States and its South Korean and Japanese allies showed their muscle as well by conducting military exercises of their own. In addition, one of the U.S.’s largest guided-missile submarines showed up in the South Korean port of Busan, ahead of the imminent arrival to the region of a naval strike group led by an aircraft carrier. The military build-up on both sides comes amid heightened tensions over North Korea’s nuclear and missile programs, and warnings from the Trump administration that “all options are on the table” for dealing with the regime in Pyongyang.

Second, today, under the Sign category of DISTRESS AMONG NATIONS — According to the Washington Free Beacon, Federal authorities have open investigations into Islamic terrorists in all 50 states. The Department of Homeland Security is warning that the threat of terrorism in the United States has reached an all time high with radicalized individuals in the country plotting to strike “each and every single day.” DHS Secretary John Kelly said the FBI has “opened terrorist investigations in all 50 states,” while also disclosing on Tuesday that there have been at least 37 “ISIS-linked plots to attack our country” since 2013. Kelly, in his first wide-ranging public address on the threat of terrorism in America since taking office, warned that America’s borders remain wide-open and that there is evidence terror-linked individuals are exploiting these national security weaknesses.

Third, today, under the Sign category of EARTHQUAKES IN DIVERS PLACES — According to Reuters, A strong magnitude 6.9 earthquake struck off the west coast of Chile on Monday, rocking the capital Santiago and briefly causing alarm along the Pacific Coast but sparing the quake-prone nation of any serious damage. The U.S. Geological Survey twice revised the magnitude before settling on 6.9, a strength usually capable of causing severe damage. The epicenter’s shallow depth of 15.5 miles below the sea allowed it to be felt hundreds of miles away. Santiago office buildings swayed for about 30 seconds at the end of the workday. Closer to the epicenter, residents scrambled for higher ground, remembering the lessons of the country’s devastating earthquake and tsunami in 2010.

Now, it’s time for Prophecy Bootcamp.

Prophecy Bootcamp is where we deal with the basics of prophecy, the Second Coming of Christ, and what will happen in the future according to the Bible. Our aim here is not to make predictions but to help you get prepared by understanding how things will unfold in the end times.

Our topic for today is titled “Battle of Armageddon (Part 3)” from Dr. Ed Hindson’s book “Revelation: Unlocking the Future.” And, I want to remind you to take advantage of our special offer. If you enjoy this podcast, please feel free to purchase a copy of this book — “Revelation: Unlocking the Future” by Dr. Ed Hindson. Dr. Hindson simplifies the message of the Revelation so that you can easily understand it for yourself. You need this book in your library. It is available on our website for just $30. You can make your purchase today at SecondComingHerald.com.

The final “Battle of Armageddon” is called the wrath of the Lord, the fury of the Lord, the terror of the Lord, the vengeance of God, the harvest of judgment, the grapes of wrath, and the great supper of God.

The devastation of Armageddon will be so extensive that it is probably best viewed as a war that destroys most of earth as well as a final battle focused in the Middle east. This also best explains the development of catastrophic events in Revelation 15-19.

The carnage will be so great that most of earth’s population will be annihilated. The plant life all over the planet will be nearly destroyed. The air and water will be severely polluted. “Babylon” will be burned up. The armies of the Antichrist will be wiped out, and the beast and the False Prophet will be thrown into the lake of fire.

The final devastation will be the self-destructive acts of a world gone mad without God. The Bible says darkness will reign, the heavens will be shaken, the earth will quake, huge hailstones will fall from the sky, and the invading host will destroy itself.

The prophet Zechariah describes this day in vivid terms: “The Lord will strike all the nations that fought against Jerusalem: Their flesh will rot while they are still standing on their feet, their eyes will rot in their sockets, and their tongues will rot in their mouths. On that day people will be stricken by the Lord with great panic. They will seize each other by the hand and attack one another.”

As terrible as the Battle of Armageddon will be, it will not mark the end of the earth. Zechariah 14:16 tells us that “any who are left of all the nations that went against Jerusalem will go up from year to year to worship the King, the Lord of Hosts.” Revelation 20;1-6 tells us that Satan will be bound one thousands years while we serve as “priest of God and of Christ” and reign with Jesus during those one thousand years.

In closing, let’s consider what God wants you and me to do in light of His Second Coming.

Jesus Christ said in Luke 19:13 to “Occupy till I come.” In light of that, we are continuing our journey through the book, “Coming Events and Present Duties,” by J.C. Ryle. It is a collection of what he called “prophetical tracts” that focus on the believer’s duty in light of the signs which point to the second coming of Jesus Christ.

This section is titled, “Occupy Until I Come!” (Part 19) based on the parable of the nobleman who went away and left talents for his servants to use in his absence. J.C. Ryle writes:

Think how arousing these words ought to be to all who are rich in this world but do not know how to spend their money rightly. Alas, there are many who live on as if Christ had never said anything about the difficulty of rich men being saved! They are rich towards their own pleasures, or their own tastes, or their own families — but not rich towards God! They live as if they would not have to give an account of their use of money! They live as if there was no reckoning day before the bar of Christ! They live as if Christ had never said, “It is more blessed to give than to receive.” “Sell what you have, and give alms; provide yourselves bags which wax not old, a treasure in Heaven that fails not.”

I do beseech you consider your ways and be wise. Cease to be content with giving God’s cause a few dollars; give far more liberally than you have done yet — give hundreds where you now give tens; give thousands where you now give hundreds. Then, and not until then, shall you be “occupying,” as one who looks for Christ’s return. Alas, for the covetousness and narrow-heartedness of the Church of these days! May the Lord open the eyes of rich Christians.

If the Lord tarries His Coming and we live, we will continue looking at this topic in our next broadcast/podcast.

……..
CLOSING PRAYER
…….

Remember the words of the Lord in Matthew 24:42: “Watch therefore: for ye know not what hour your Lord doth come.” Matthew 24:44 says, “Therefore be ye also ready: for in such an hour as ye think not the Son of man cometh.”

If you are not ready for the Return of Jesus Christ, may I encourage you to get ready today by receiving Him as your Savior. Here is how:

First, accept the fact that you are a sinner, and that you have broken God’s law. The Bible says in Romans 3:23: “For all have sinned and come short of the glory of God.”

Second, accept the fact that there is a penalty for sin. The Bible states in Romans 6:23: “For the wages of sin is death…” Third, accept the fact that you are on the road to hell. Now that is bad news, but here is the good news. Pray and ask Him to come into your heart today, and He will.

Romans 10:9-13 says, “That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved. For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation. For the scripture saith, Whosoever believeth on him shall not be ashamed. For there is no difference between the Jew and the Greek: for the same Lord over all is rich unto all that call upon him. For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.”

Keep looking up for your redemption draweth nigh. Let us join in the prayer of John the Revelator — “Even so, come, Lord Jesus.” God bless you.

Israel Completes David’s Sling System (Second Coming Watch Update #859)

Daniel Whyte III

Daniel Whyte III

First, under the Sign category of THE TURMOIL IN ISRAEL & THE MIDDLE EAST — According to the Associated Press, a joint U.S.-Israeli missile interceptor meant to counter the type of medium-range missiles possessed by Iranian-backed Hezbollah militants became operational on Sunday, completing Israel’s multi-layer defense system amid tensions on its frontiers with Syria and Gaza. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said at the unveiling ceremony for the David’s Sling system that defending the home front is of the “utmost importance.” He went on to warn “whoever tries to strike us will be hit, those that threaten our existence put themselves in existential danger.” David Sling’s marks the completion of Israel’s multi-tier system that includes the Arrow, designed to intercept long-range ballistic missiles in the stratosphere with an eye on Iran, and Iron Dome, which defends against short-range rockets from the Gaza Strip.

Second, today, under the Sign category of WARS & RUMORS OF WARS — According to Breitbart, a top American commander has warned lawmakers that the U.S. needs to consider military action to disrupt Iran’s malicious activities in the Middle East, North Africa, and South Asia, which have intensified since the Islamic Republic signed a nuclear deal with world powers in 2015. Gen. Joseph Votel, the head of U.S. Central Command testified before the House Armed Services Committee about the security challenges facing his area of responsibility. Votel said, “Iran poses the most significant threat to the Central Region and to our national interests and the interests of our partners and allies. We have not seen any improvement in Iran’s behavior since the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), addressing Iran’s nuclear program, was finalized in July 2015. I think we need to look at opportunities where we can disrupt their activities through military means or other means.”

Third, today, under the Sign category of DISTRESS AMONG NATIONS — According to CNBC, U.S. satellites may be vulnerable to attacks from China and Russia that could make future war’s a lot riskier. Michael Krepon, a space security expert and co-founder of the Stimson Center think tank in Washington, D.C., said, “Every major space-faring nation that can track a satellite and launch into outer space has the means to mess up a satellite.” Last week, Navy Vice Admiral Charles Richard, deputy commander of U.S. Strategic Command, warned in a speech at a CSIS space security conference about offensive space capabilities and weapons being developed by China and Russia. He said, “While we’re not at war in space, I don’t think we can say we are exactly at peace either. With rapidly growing threats to our space systems, as well as the threat of a degraded space environment, we must prepare for a conflict that extends into space.”

Fourth, today, under the Sign category of DISTRESS AMONG NATIONS — According to The Hill, Russian President Vladimir Putin’s top spokesman said on Friday that the relationship between the U.S. and Russia may be more antagonistic now than it was during the decades-long Cold War. Asked by ABC host George Stephanopoulos if the U.S. and Russia were in a “new Cold War,” Dmitry Peskov said the current situation may be worse, blaming the U.S. for disintegrating cooperation between the two countries. Putin has denied that Russia sought to interfere in the U.S. presidential election. But intelligence officials have warned that the Kremlin is likely to try to meddle in other upcoming elections across Western Europe.

Fifth, today, under the Sign category of WARS & RUMORS OF WARS — According to ABC News, Former Defense Secretary Ash Carter says a U.S. preemptive strike against North Korea’s nuclear-weapons program could prompt the country’s leader, Kim Jong Un, to try to invade South Korea. Carter, who served as defense secretary in the Obama administration, told ABC News that if the U.S. preemptively strikes North Korea, “It’s quite possible that they would, as a consequence of that launch, attempt an invasion of South Korea.” He said, “I’m confident of the outcome of that war, which would be the defeat of North Korea, but this is a war with an intensity of violence associated with it that we haven’t seen since the last Korean War.” Noting that the South Korean capital of Seoul, with about 25 million area residents, is on the border between the two countries, the former defense secretary said, “Even though the outcome is certain, it is a very destructive war.”

The prophetic passage of Scripture that we are looking at today is Jeremiah 30:4-7 which reads: “And these are the words that the Lord spake concerning Israel and concerning Judah. For thus saith the Lord; We have heard a voice of trembling, of fear, and not of peace. Ask ye now, and see whether a man doth travail with child? wherefore do I see every man with his hands on his loins, as a woman in travail, and all faces are turned into paleness? Alas! for that day is great, so that none is like it: it is even the time of Jacob’s trouble, but he shall be saved out of it.”

Allow me to share with you some commentary on this passage from the Popular Bible Prophecy Commentary, edited by Tim LaHaye and Ed Hindson.

Verses 8-11 provide the details of just how Israel’s deliverance will be accomplished. God states He is going to break the oppressor’s yoke. “His yoke” refers to the Antichrist in that end-time period. His yoke over the Jews will be broken, and Israel will be freed. This is followed by a promise: “Foreigners will no more enslave them.” This prophecy is not referring to the return from the Babylonian captivity, for since that time, strangers have in fact made the Jews their bondmen (servants).

After the Tribulation will come the final restoration, which is when this promise will be fulfilled. Though the Jews will not be enslaved, they will serve someone: “they shall serve [first] the LORD their God, and [second] David their king.” Some interpret “David their king” as being a reference to the Messiah. But there is no reason to avoid the literal interpretation of Scripture here. This should be taken as the literal David, “whom I will raise up for them.” Indeed, King David will someday be resurrected, and he will be a co-regent with Jesus over Israel. This is also taught in Ezekiel 34 and 37, and Hosea 3.

Israel is not to fear nor be dismayed for two reasons: The first is that Israel is going to be regathered: “I will save you from afar and your offspring from the land of their captivity.” The Jews will return; they will rest quietly and be “at ease, and no one will make [them] afraid.” The second reason is that Israel is going to survive. The promise here is very graphic: God intends to eventually “destroy completely all the nations” to which God has scattered the Jewish people. But He will never make a full end of the Jewish people. He will discipline them, He “will correct [them] in justice,” and He will not “let [them] go altogether unpunished.” So the Jewish people are guaranteed to survive, as they already have throughout the centuries. Although the Tribulation will be severe for the Jews, Israel, as a nation and a people, will survive it.

If the Lord tarries His coming and we live, we will continue looking at the prophetic passages of the Bible in our next broadcast / podcast.

Our second coming quote for today is from Alan Redpath. He said, “The immense step from the Babe at Bethlehem to the living, reigning triumphant Lord Jesus, returning to earth for His own people – that is the glorious truth proclaimed throughout Scripture. May we always be alert for the final trumpet that will announce His return, when we shall always be with Him.”

The Bible says in 1 Thessalonians 4:16-17: “For the Lord himself shall descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel, and with the trump of God: and the dead in Christ shall rise first: Then we which are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds, to meet the Lord in the air: and so shall we ever be with the Lord.”

PROPHECY BOOTCAMP: Our topic for today is titled “Judgment Begins at the House of God” (Part 9) from Dr. Ed Hindson’s book “Revelation: Unlocking the Future”.

PERGAMUM: THE POLITICAL CHURCH (PART 3)

There were two doctrinal errors that Christ addressed in this church. The doctrine of Balaam refers to the Old Testament story of the prophet Balaam’s religious compromise with Balak, the king of Moab. The doctrine of the Nicolaitans is believed to have derived from Nicolas of Antioch, whose disciples insisted that Christian freedom meant “lawlessness.” Like Balaam of old, they believed that a little idolatry or a little immorality or a little compromise of the truth couldn’t really hurt anything. In fact, such compromise made Christianity all the more tolerable in a pagan city. But Jesus said that He hated such false doctrine.

The Great Shepherd was concerned about the wayward condition of the flock at Pergamum. He was concerned that a little compromise would lead to the ultimate destruction of the church. In fact, the Greek term nikolaos means “destroyer of the people.” The false doctrines of Balaam and the Nicolaitans said that Christian liberty allowed participation in worldly activities. They attempted to use Christian liberty to justify their personal compromise with sinful paganism. Our Lord’s letter emphasizes several things that are vital for any effective church:

1. Love for the truth. We cannot tolerate doctrinal error under the excuse that we must love everybody. First and foremost, we must love the truth and let it be the final authority in the church.

2. Desire for holiness. We cannot win a lost world with a worldly Christianity. Only godly believers who practice what they preach will win them to Christ. Integrity is the missing ingredient in modern religion. The unbelieving world will not listen to anyone who doesn’t have it.

3. Willingness to repent. The Lord called upon this church to repent of their compromise. If He insisted they repent, how much more would He call upon us to do the same! To those who would repent, He promised three things: 1) hidden manna, 2) a white stone, 3) a new name. All three of these point to His high priestly role. The manna was hidden in the Ark of the Covenant. The white stone was the Urim on the high priest’s vestment. And the “new” name was the self-revelation of Christ.

In summarizing the situation at Pergamum, John Stott observes: “The emperor cult has long since vanished. But the ‘false prophet’ has not died. He lives again in every non-Christian religion and philosophy, and in every attempt to divert to others the honor that is due to Jesus Christ alone.”

Blessed is that servant, whom his lord when he cometh shall find so doing. Verily I say unto you, That he shall make him ruler over all his goods.”

PERGAMUM: THE POLITICAL CHURCH (PART 2)

Pergamum was an incredible city. Pillared temples, public buildings, and massive fortifications sat atop the acropolis. And above it all was the great Temple of Zeus, king of the gods. When Attalus III of Pergamum died in 133 BC, he bequeathed the city to the Romans, and they made it their political capital in Asia. The local library was one of the greatest in the ancient world, boasting a collection of 200,000 volumes.

Pergamum was also known for its famous healing and medical center. Here, religious meditation, dream interpretation, snake handling, and medical arts were combined for healing purposes. The Sacred Way led from the Asclepion, built in honor of the god of healing, toward the acropolis, which rose a thousand feet above the plain. Near the summit stood the immense altar to Zeus. A short distance away was the elegant Temple of Athena (Greek goddess of war). But more than anything else, the imperial cult of Caesar worship dominated all else at Pergamum.

Christ began His letter to the church at Pergamum by reminding them, “I know where you dwell.” He was fully aware that these believers were surrounded by a non-Christian society. and exposed to its values, standards, and pressures. Confrontation between the power of the state and the young Christian church was inevitable.

Christian tradition claims that Gaius was the first bishop of Pergamum and that he was succeeded by Antipas, whom the Lord refers to in His letter as “My witness, My faithful one.” His name means “against all” and may refer to his willingness to stand against all compromise and temptation.

Despite this wonderful heritage, the Lord had two great concerns for this church. Christ is depicted as holding a two-edged sword. The “right of the sword” was viewed by the Romans as the power over life and death and was vested in the proconsul. Here, Christ assumes this right. Thus, He reminds His Church that He alone is sovereign and supreme. He alone has all power!

Forty miles north of Sardis sits ancient Pergamum in the Caicus Valley. Pliny, the Roman writer, called it “the most famous city in Asia.” It was the center of Roman power and authority in the province. In fact, the residents of this city worshiped power. As early as 29 BC, it became the site of the first temple of the Caesar-cult, erected in honor of Augustus Caesar. The city also housed an ancient temple to the god Zeus — the god of power. The altar from that temple is in the Berlin Museum and was often visited by Adolf Hitler. Pergamum (also, Pergamos) was the epitome of the hunger for power in pagan society.

There was no distinction between religion and politics in Pergamum. The city’s coins depicted intertwined serpents to represent the interconnection between the sacred and the secular. For the pagans in this city, politics was religion and religion was politics. And for the Christians, there was a constant temptation to compromise their beliefs and practices for political gain.

Religion has always had a precarious relationship to political power. When power is on the side of religion, it tends to corrupt it. But when power is against religion, it tends to persecute it. Unfortunately, the pressure of persecution often drives religion to seek power as a means of protection and self-preservation. In time, religion itself often falls victim to the very thing it opposes. It has been observed more than once that the ultimate subversion of Christianity occurs whenever we confuse spiritual authority with political power.

For as in the days that were before the flood they were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, until the day that Noe entered into the ark, And knew not until the flood came, and took them all away; so shall also the coming of the Son of man be.”

This section is titled: SMYRNA: THE PERSECUTED CHURCH (PART 2)

Persecution was the watchword of this church. They had suffered often at the hands of the Romans and would suffer even more in the years to come. The Jewish population in Smyrna was particularly anti-Christian. They led the chant demanding the martyrdom of Polycarp and other believers. But as was so often the case, the blood of the martyrs was the seed of the church. The church at Smyrna grew into one of the most revered and influential churches of its time because its leaders were willing to lay down their lives for Christ and the gospel.

Four things characterizing the suffering of the believers at Smyrna were mentioned in our Lord’s letter to them:

1. Poverty: They had been excluded from the financial prosperity of the city and were rich only in Christ.

2. Slander: The unbelieving Jews slandered them as heretics and troublemakers. But Jesus said such were of the “synagogue of Satan.”

3. Prison: Many of them would be imprisoned for their faith in Christ as were so many of the apostles.

4. Death: Like Polycarp and others, many of these believers died for their faith rather than worship the Roman emperor. They were indeed “faithful unto death.”

There are no words of condemnation for this church. There is no call to repentance. They are told they are rich in Christ. and exhorted to be faithful unto death. The heaven epistolary expresses no regret. Their deaths are but temporary in light of eternity. They will be rewarded with a “crown of life” and will overcome the “second death.”

it is difficult, if not impossible, for most modern Christians to comprehend what it must be like to risk all you have for Christ. Most of us struggle with concerns about public embarrassment or social rejection. We know little or nothing about laying down our lives for the gospel.

Joseph Tson, a Romanian Baptist pastor, survived great personal persecution during the Communist regime in Romania. He and members of his church became part of the revival God used to break the Soviet grip on his nation. When faced with the possibility of imprisonment and death, he met a fellow believer who challenged him with what he calls the “theology of martyrdom.” Tson calls it the “greatest privilege of the Christian life — to give your life for Christ.” “But,” he adds, “you must be counted worthy to die for Christ!” Despite all his personal suffering and that of his family, Tson laments, “We were not worthy!”
