The prophetic passage of Scripture that we are looking at today is Isaiah 66:7-9

Our second coming quote for today is from I.M. Haldeman. He said, “The Spirit seems to exhaust human vocabulary in the vain endeavor to proclaim [the coming of Christ]. The noblest prose and the most exalted poetry the world ever knew break like waves upon the shore and at times seem to turn into mist in utter helplessness to express the coming glory. The stars of Heaven pale, break loose from their orbits and fall, the waves of the sea roar, the floods lift up their voices, the mountains bow down at His presence, the trees of the wood clap their hands, and every voice in Heaven and earth cries out: ‘Behold, He cometh! He cometh!—the King!’ …Your ears are full of the footsteps of the coming King.”

— The Beast of the Earth: the False Prophet

This creature is distinct from the beast of the sea in that he calls attention to the first beast and persuades the world to worship the Antichrist. He even sets up an “image” of the first beast and “deceives those who dwell on the earth”. He is pictured as having power to make fire “come down out of heaven”. He also gives “breath” to the image of the beast and uses his power to pervert true religion.

The second beast looks like a lamb (a possible parody of The Lamb—Jesus Christ), but he talks like a dragon (with the power and authority of Satan). He also exercises all the authority of the first beast. This second beast is later called the “false prophet”. Thus, he is pictured as a false religious leader, in contrast to the more political nature of the first beast.

OCCUPY TILL I COME: We are continuing our journey through the book, “Coming Events and Present Duties,” by J.C. Ryle. This section is titled, “Occupy Until I Come!” (Part 2) based on the parable of the nobleman who went away and left talents for his servants to use in his absence in Luke 19:11-13. J.C. Ryle writes:

[The disciples’ first mistake was that] they did not realize that before all these prophecies could be fulfilled, “it behooved Christ to suffer.” Their optimistic expectations overleaped the crucifixion and the long parenthesis of time to follow, and bounded onward to the final glory. They did not see that there was to be a first advent of Messiah “to be cut off,” before the second advent of Messiah to reign. They did not perceive that the sacrifices and ceremonies of the law of Moses were first to receive their fulfillment in a better sacrifice and a better high priest, and the shedding of blood more precious than that of bulls and goats. They did not comprehend that before the glory — Christ must be crucified, and an elect people gathered out from among the Gentiles by the preaching of the Gospel.

A thorough study of the Apocalypse reveals that the beast is both an individual leader and a political system. He is a king who is also emblematic of the kingdom he rules. Both he and that kingdom collectively are the beast of the Revelation. Even his symbolic number (666) does not equate perfectly with any historical figure, though both pagan Rome and papal Rome have been suggested. The earliest candidate was Nero, but in order to make the computation work, the calculation required using a Hebrew transliteration of the Greek form of the Latin name. Even that method required adding an n (Neron Caesar) to add up to 666. “Nero Caesar” in Latin adds up only to 616. We must also remember that John’s readers did not know Hebrew for the most part.

OCCUPY TILL I COME: We are continuing our journey through the book, “Coming Events and Present Duties,” by J.C. Ryle. This section is titled, “Occupy Until I Come!” (Part 1) based on the parable of the nobleman who went away and left talents for his servants to use in his absence in Luke 19:11-13. J.C. Ryle writes:

Luke 19:11-13 says, “And as they heard these things, he added and spoke a parable, because he was near to Jerusalem, and because they thought that the kingdom of God would immediately appear. He said therefore, A certain nobleman went into a far country to receive for himself a kingdom, and to return. And he called his ten servants, and delivered them ten pounds, and said unto them, OCCUPY UNTIL I COME!”

I will first speak of the mistake into which the disciples had fallen.

What was this mistake? With what feelings ought Christians in the present day to regard this mistake?

PROPHECY HEADLINES: Saudi Arabia, Egypt pledge to form pan-Arab military | Israel says wave of Palestinian violence is fading | Iran says its missile program is not up for negotiation

PROPHECY BOOTCAMP: Our topic for today is titled “The Rise of Antichrist (Part 5)” from Dr. Ed Hindson’s book “Revelation: Unlocking the Future.”

The eschatological monster from the sea represents the epitome and culmination of the Gentile powers of all time. Thus, he is the embodiment of the lion, bear, leopard, and monster of Daniel’s vision of the four beasts. As in Daniel’s prophecy of the fourth beast, he is described as having seven heads and ten horns.

Most commentators understand the beast of the sea to be the Antichrist. Whether he is a specific person, a political system, or both, is a matter of debate. Since he is associated with the same symbols given to Rome (seven heads and ten horns), it is generally assumed that he represents the revived Roman Empire of the Last Days. The characteristics of the beast are the same as those of the “little horn” of Daniel 7:8. He is arrogant, egotistical, powerful, and ruthless. And he will bring the final abomination upon Jerusalem.

OCCUPY TILL I COME: We are continuing our journey through the book, “Coming Events and Present Duties,” by J.C. Ryle. This section is titled, “Watch” (Part 43) based on the parable of the foolish and wise virgins in Matthew 25:1-13. J.C. Ryle writes:

Watch not least against the sin of Jehu. A man may have great zeal to all appearance — and yet have very bad motives. It is a much easier thing to oppose Antichrist — than to follow Christ. It is one thing to protest against error — it is quite another thing to love the truth. So watch and pray!

Let us all watch more than we have done! Let us watch more every year that we live. Let us watch, that we may not be surprised when the Lord appears.

The prophetic passage of Scripture that we are looking at today is Isaiah 66:1-6 which reads: “Thus saith the Lord, The heaven is my throne, and the earth is my footstool: where is the house that ye build unto me? and where is the place of my rest?… Hear the word of the Lord, ye that tremble at his word; Your brethren that hated you, that cast you out for my name’s sake, said, Let the Lord be glorified: but he shall appear to your joy, and they shall be ashamed. A voice of noise from the city, a voice from the temple, a voice of the Lord that rendereth recompence to his enemies.”

Our second coming quote for today is from J.A. Bengel. He said, “Between Jesus’ ascension and His coming no event intervenes equal in importance to these: therefore, these two are joined together. Naturally, then, the apostles set before them the day of Christ as very near. And it accords with the majesty of Christ that during the whole period between His ascension and His advent, He should without intermission be expected.”

PROPHECY HEADLINES: Iran warns U.S. against crossing ‘red lines’ regarding its missile program | Video reportedly shows more Russian troops heading into Syria | Over 30 killed in fighting between Armenian and Azerbaijani forces

PROPHECY BOOTCAMP: Our topic for today is titled “The Rise of Antichrist (Part 4)” from Dr. Ed Hindson’s book “Revelation: Unlocking the Future.”

The Bible predicts the rise of a counterfeit messiah in the Last Days. While many of his titles and descriptions emphasize the diabolical character of his rule, we must remember that he is ultimately a deceiver who promises to bring world peace. Jesus reminds us, “I have come in My Father’s name, and you do not receive me; if another shall come in his own name, you will receive him.”

Dave Hunt points out, “Many prophecy students have this picture of the Antichrist as some obviously evil ogre who will directly oppose Christ. However, the meaning of antichrist also means ‘in place of.’ Thus the Antichrist will rise to power brilliantly. He will oppose the Messiah by pretending to be Him.”

OCCUPY TILL I COME: We are continuing our journey through the book, “Coming Events and Present Duties,” by J.C. Ryle. This section is titled, “Watch” (Part 42) based on the parable of the foolish and wise virgins in Matthew 25:1-13. J.C. Ryle writes:

Watch against slothfulness about the Bible and private prayer. There is nothing so spiritual, but we may at last do it formally. Most backslidings begin in the closet. When a tree is snapped in two by a high wind, we generally find there had been some long hidden decay. Oh, watch and pray!

The prophetic passage of Scripture that we are looking at today is Isaiah 66:1-6.

Our second coming quote for today is from Francis Pieper. He said, “The return of Christ is to be maintained as a positive fact against both the direct denial of it by the scoffers who say, ‘Where is the promise of His coming?’ and the forgetfulness of the Christians, who according to their flesh are very apt to fail to remember the return of Christ.”
