— The Great Sea Monster
The uniqueness of John’s vision is his portrayal of the first beast as a giant sea monster. We should remember that John was on an island in the Aegean Sea when he received this vision. The Aegean sits between Greece to the west and Asia Minor (modern Turkey) to the east. The Aegean itself is a part of the “Great Sea” (the Mediterranean), which the Romans called “our sea” because of their domination of the Mediterranean basin.
The monster from the sea is a very fitting symbol for the Roman Empire. From John’s perspective, Rome lay across the waters of the Mediterranean to the west. It was separated from the eastern part of the empire by water at the Hellespont as well as between Greece and Asia Minor near the Black Sea. Technically, there was no direct land connection between Europe and Asia at that point.
OCCUPY TILL I COME: We are continuing our journey through the book, “Coming Events and Present Duties,” by J.C. Ryle. This section is titled, “Watch” (Part 40) based on the parable of the foolish and wise virgins in Matthew 25:1-13. J.C. Ryle writes:
My last word of application shall be an exhortation to all true believers — to all who have the oil of grace in their hearts, and have fled for pardon to the blood of the Lamb. I draw it from the words of the Lord Jesus at the end of the parable. I exhort you earnestly “to watch.”
I exhort you to watch against everything which might interfere with a readiness for Christ’s appearing. Search your own hearts. Find out the things which most frequently interrupt your communion with Christ, and cause fogs to rise between you and the sun. Mark these things, and know them, and against them ever watch and be on your guard.
