— Will the Temple Be Rebuilt?
The Jewish people have always loved the temple. As soon as David conquered Jerusalem, he desired to build a temple to Jehovah. While he raised the funds and collected the materials, it was his son Solomon who actually built the first temple in about 950 B.C. That temple stood until 586 B.C., when Nebuchadnezzar, the king of Babylon, destroyed it. After the Babylonian captivity, some of the Jews returned to Jerusalem and built the second temple under the leadership of Zerubbabel in 520-515 B.C. That temple was later remodeled and expanded by Herod the Great in 20 B.C. The second temple stood until a.d. 70, when the Romans demolished it.
It has been nearly two thousand years since there has been a Jewish temple on Mt. Moriah. Since A.D. 691 the Muslim shrine, the Dome of the Rock, has stood on the site of the ancient Jewish temples. Ever since the Jewish people began returning to the Promised Land, there has been talk of building a third temple. There is presently a Temple Institute in Jerusalem that is dedicated to reconstructing the instruments of worship for the new temple. However, as long as the Dome of the Rock stands on Mt. Moriah, it is unlikely the new temple will be built there.
OCCUPY TILL I COME: We are continuing our journey through the book, “Coming Events and Present Duties,” by J.C. Ryle. This section is titled, “Watch” (Part 26) based on the parable of the foolish and wise virgins in Matthew 25:1-13. J.C. Ryle writes:
Learn, in the last place, that Christ’s second coming will make an immense change to all members of the visible Church, both good and bad.
