The Bible says in Revelation 22:12: “And, behold, I come quickly; and my reward is with me, to give every man according as his work shall be.”
PROPHECY BOOTCAMP: Our topic for today is titled “The Fifth Seal: Martyrs in Heaven” from Dr. Ed Hindson’s book “Revelation: Unlocking the Future.”
The destruction described in the first four seals is a preview of what is to come in the trumpet and bowl judgments. First, we have the wide-angle panorama, then the detailed snapshots follow. The seer is describing a vision of world-wide destruction that shall come at some distant time in the future, prior to the glorious return of Christ.
The fifth seal reveals martyrs in heaven. The souls of martyred believers “underneath the altar” cry out for vengeance. They are described as those “who had been slain because of the word of God, and because of the testimony which they had maintained.” One of the interpretive issues in the Revelation is the question, Who are these martyrs? Are they Christians who have died throughout the years of church history? Or are these martyrs the Tribulation saints who have come to faith in Christ after the Rapture and been slain? The fact that they were “underneath the altar,” the place where the blood of the sin offering was poured out, signifies the completion of their sacrifice.
