DIVINE WRATH & GREAT TRIBULATION

The fact that “God shall wipe every tear from their eyes” indicates that the vast multitude of believers seen in John’s vision have suffered greatly on earth. The Great Tribulation refers to that eschatological period of God’s wrath. It is not merely the persecution or “troubles” of John’s own time, but a time of future global retribution, called in Revelation 3:10 the “hour of testing,” and in Revelation 6:16, “the wrath of the Lamb.”

Understanding the nature of these judgments is crucial to one’s interpretation of the Apocalypse. If the judgments of the Tribulation period are something less than divine wrath, one might better argue for the Church remaining on earth during the Tribulation. But there are two glaring contradictions to that viewpoint: 1) This is divine wrath; 2) The multitude is already in heaven, but the Tribulation judgments are not yet finished.

Having listed 144,000 Jews (12,000 from each of the twelve tribes), John says, “After these things…” This is John’s typical literary expression to move the reader on to the next event, or, in this case, the next group.

The innumerable multitude is not just Jews from the twelve tribes of Israel. They are a host of people from every nation (Gentiles and Jews) and are so great in number they cannot humanly be counted. John specifically identifies this group as coming from every nation, tribe, people group, and language group. The partitive “ek” (meaning “from”) means that only some from every one of these groups will be represented. That this is a body of redeemed people is obvious from the fact that they stand before the Lamb in white robes (indicating righteousness), waving palm branches (indicating victory).

Our second coming quote for today is from Alexander Maclaren. He said: “The primitive church thought a great deal more about the coming of Christ than about death, and thought a great deal more about his coming than about heaven.”

The Bible says in Revelation 16:17-21: “And the seventh angel poured out his vial into the air; and there came a great voice out of the temple of heaven, from the throne, saying, It is done. And there were voices, and thunders, and lightnings; and there was a great earthquake, such as was not since men were upon the earth, so mighty an earthquake, and so great.”

The premiliennial view holds that Christ will return at the end of the Church Age in order to set up His kingdom on earth for a literal one thousand years. Most also believe there will be a Great Tribulation period on earth prior to the return of Christ. Among premillennialists are those who believe the Church will go through the Tribulation (postribulationists), those who believe the Church will be raptured prior to the Tribulation (pretribulationists) and even a few who believe the Church will be raptured in the middle of the Tribulation (midtribulationists). Despite these differences in regard to the Rapture of the Church, premillennialists generally believe in the future restoration of the state of Israel and the eventual conversion of the Jews to Christianity.

With these distinctions in mind, notice several things about the two groups of people in Revelation 7.

The 144,000 servants of God are described as Jews from “every tribe of the sons of Israel.” The number seems to be literal, but it could also be symbolic of totality. There is no indication in the text that they are to be viewed as the New Testament church or Gentile Christians. They are said to be living on earth and need to be sealed in order to be protected from the judgments that are coming on the earth. When we consider the symbolism of the “woman” (Israel) and the “rest of her offspring” (converted Jews) in Revelation 12:1-17, it is clear that the 144,000 are literal Israelites. In fact, Revelation 7:5-8 specifically lists the fact that 12,000 come from each of the twelve tribes of Israel.
