The prophetic passage of Scripture we are looking at today is Leviticus 23:23-25 which reads: “And the Lord spake unto Moses, saying, Speak unto the children of Israel, saying, In the seventh month, in the first day of the month, shall ye have a sabbath, a memorial of blowing of trumpets, an holy convocation. Ye shall do no servile work therein: but ye shall offer an offering made by fire unto the Lord.”

This section is titled: EPHESUS: THE PREOCCUPIED CHURCH (PART 1)

The church at Ephesus was one of the outstanding churches of the apostolic era. Paul, Timothy, and John all served this church in the first century of the Christian era. Aquila and Priscilla were also very actively involved at Ephesus, as was Apollos. This was a privileged church, indeed! Yet, as time wore on, they had begun to lose their priority and became preoccupied with other things.

John himself is thought to have resided in Ephesus for over thirty years. It was here that he wrote the Gospel of John and his three epistles. This was a time when emperor worship was the predominant religion of the Roman Empire. Christians like John found themselves in conflict with the popular religion of their time. Therefore, it was essential that they take a clear stand for their belief.

Ephesus was known as the “metropolis of Asia.” It was considered a “free city” and was self-governing. There was no permanent Roman military stationed there. It was a large and prosperous city. Even today, its ruins are the most extensive in the whole region. Ancient Ephesus had a population of more than 250,000 people! It also had a large Jewish population. The theater seated 25,000 spectators and was the scene of the riot in Acts 19:28-29. The marble paved main street was lined with shops and public buildings.

The greatest structure of all at Ephesus was the Temple of Diana — one of the seven wonders of the ancient world. The temple stood on a platform measuring over 100,000 square feet (twice the size of a football field). The temple itself was supported by 100 marble columns. Each was a monolith (a single stone) 55 feet in height. Inside the temple stood the statue of the goddess Diana.

The prophetic passage of Scripture we are looking at today is Leviticus 23:22 which reads: “And when ye reap the harvest of your land, thou shalt not make clean riddance of the corners of thy field when thou reapest, neither shalt thou gather any gleaning of thy harvest: thou shalt leave them unto the poor, and to the stranger: I am the Lord your God.”

WHAT DO THE SEVEN CHURCHES REPRESENT?

A basic reading of these letters reveals that they are simply seven local churches that all existed at the same time and in the same general area. Each had its own unique characteristics, strengths, and weaknesses. At best, we can suggest only that they represent seven different types of churches.

The message to each church follows the same sevenfold pattern:

1. Commission: “To the angel of the church in…”
2. Character: “The One who…says this…”
3. Commendation: “I know your deeds…”
4. Condemnation: “But I have this against you…”
5. Correction: “Repent, turn, change…”
6. Call: “He who has an ear, let him hear…”
7. Challenge: “To him who overcomes…”

There are exceptions to this pattern. For example, there are no words of commendation for Sardis or Laodicea, and no words of condemnation for Smyrna or Philadelphia. Certainly, the latter two are upheld as ideals for the others. Notice also that all seven churches still had a lampstand, including Laodicea. Of the Laodicean church, the Lord also said, “Those whom I love, I reprove and discipline.” Here we see the Lord of the Church appealing to His churches in love and concern. The appeal of these letters is personal to each local church. At the same time, the principles dealt with are universal in nature.

First U.S. troops head to Middle East for Syrian training mission (Second Coming Watch #584)

1. Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel has ordered the first group of about 100 U.S. troops to head to the Middle East in the next few days to establish training sites for Syrian opposition fighters battling Islamic State militants.

2. An Israeli television station has reported that Iran has built a 27-meter-long missile, capable of delivering a warhead “far beyond Europe,” and placed it on a launch pad at a site close to Tehran.

3. In recent months, India has seen a wave of violence towards Christians that left five dead, including one 11-year-old child. A new report revealed that another 7,000 people experienced other types of persecution that year, including 300 clergymen or leaders of Christian communities who were victims of violence.

4. Kurdish forces took control of the Syrian town of Kobani on Monday after driving out Islamic State fighters, although Washington said the four-month battle was not yet over.

5. Iran plans to continue its efforts to “destroy the Zionist entity” — and that includes arming terrorists in Judea and Samaria. Iran’s Defense Minister said, ‘Arming the West Bank is one of the policies of Iran and we will use all our capabilities in this way.’

The prophetic passage of Scripture we are looking at today is Leviticus 23:20-21 which reads: “And the priest shall wave them with the bread of the firstfruits for a wave offering before the Lord, with the two lambs: they shall be holy to the Lord for the priest. And ye shall proclaim on the selfsame day, that it may be an holy convocation unto you: ye shall do no servile work therein: it shall be a statute for ever in all your dwellings throughout your generations.”

Our second coming quote for today is from Stephen Travis. He said, “The Christian hope is not a matter for tickling our minds, but for changing our minds and influencing society.”

PROPHECY HEADLINES: Russia faces pressure to stop rebel offensive in Ukraine | After 5 months of U.S. airstrikes, ISIS has only lost one percent of the territory it seized in Iraq | Iran threatens to attack Israel from the West Bank | Iran says nuclear deal is dead if U.S. Congress votes for more sanctions | Syrian rebels reportedly monitoring Lebanese, Iranian, and Russian troops on Israeli border

PROPHECY BOOTCAMP: “Judgment Begins at the House of God” (Part 1) from Dr. Ed Hindson’s book “Revelation: Unlocking the Future”

The second section of the book of Revelation contains the letters to the seven churches. These are personal epistles from the risen Christ to seven literal churches in Asia Minor. Imagine that Jesus wrote a personal letter to your church. What would He say in that letter? These letters give us an idea of what Christ thinks of the Church.

John the Revelator has already introduced us to the seven churches in chapter 1. The risen Christ has appeared to him and instructed him to write a book and “send it to the seven churches.” These churches are symbolized by the seven golden lampstands. Thus, the connection is made between the preface and the proclamation. Jesus Christ, the Lord of the Church is moving actively in the churches as our heavenly High Priest. His love and concern for these churches has already been demonstrated on the cross. Now, as the risen, living Lord of the Church, He sends a personal message to those churches which were under John’s care and influence.

Before the Apocalypse presents any message of judgment on the unbelieving world, it first calls the churches to repentance. Judgment must begin at the house of God. If the local churches are not a proper expression of God’s truth and righteousness, how can they influence the world for Christ? In these letters, we find the Lord of the Church lovingly but firmly speaking to His Church. Some have called these “love letters from the Lord of Heaven.”

The seven churches were seven literal churches that existed in Asia Minor in the first century AD. Ephesus was the largest city in the area and presumably the largest church. Thus, it served as a “mother” church to the others. All seven were connected by the local Roman highway. They were arranged in a circular pattern going from Ephesus to Smyrna, on to Laodicea, and back to Ephesus.

Attempts to find prophetic parallels between these churches and a supposed “seven ages of church history” are forced and fanciful at best. Such parallels have been suggested since medieval times, but have always proven unsatisfactory as time moved on. Even the seven suggested in the old Scofield Reference Bible hardly do justice to the facts of church history. A careful reading of these chapters, and indeed the entire Apocalypse, will reveal that there is nothing in the text itself to indicate that these seven churches are symbolic of church history.
