PROPHECY BOOTCAMP: “Where the Dead Are Now (Part 7)” from Dr. Tim LaHaye
We need to be careful not to confuse the present conscious state of the dead with the future resurrected state of the dead. The latter is described by Paul in 1 Corinthians 15, where he speaks of the rapture, at which “we shall all be changed.” Verses 52 and 53 tell us that at the last trumpet the dead “will be raised incorruptible, and we shall be changed. For this corruptible must put on incorruption, and this mortal must put on immortality.” So far, the believer has not yet received his incorruptible resurrected body.
Remember that the resurrected body is distinctly different from the present temporary state of the dead. The best term I know to describe this state is “soulish.” (Some call it a “soul-spirit” state, but I hesitate to use the term spirit here because it could be confused with apparitions or spiritism.) The soulish state describes the present condition of the dead. We have already noted that it was described by our Lord in Luke 16:19-31 as a condition of life that is quite different from that of our physical life. In this state we are conscious and recognizable, and we can converse and be comforted or tormented. We will remember earthly events, and those who go to torment may not pass over into comfort. The Old Testament believers, as we have seen, have been taken by Christ up into Paradise, where they have already been joined by the souls of Christians ever since the first century. Also, the soulish state is attained immediately upon death.
