Troops clash with gunmen in Ukraine; Blood moons begin on Tuesday; 7.5 quake hits Solomon Islands (Second Coming Watch Sunday Roundup #13)

1. Ukraine’s president says a full-scale operation involving the army will be launched in the east of the country after pro-Russian militants seized government buildings. The US ambassador to the UN said the attacks this weekend bore the “tell-tale signs of Moscow’s involvement.” Early on Sunday Ukrainian authorities said they launched an “anti-terror operation” after armed men took over the city of Sloviansk. 

2. Megachurch pastor John Hagee is warning his San Antonio congregation and international following of a “world-shaking event that will happen between April 2014 and October 2015.” Hagee points to “four blood moons,” a rare astronomical event of four consecutive and complete lunar eclipses, known as a tetrad, which begins April 15. 

3. A forest fire has killed at least 16 people and destroyed hundreds of homes in Chile’s port city Valparaiso. Thousands of people have also been evacuated to escape the flames, which were fanned by strong winds. 

4. A powerful earthquake with a magnitude of 7.5 struck off the Solomon Islands on Sunday night, just hours after a 7.6 tremor hit earlier. A tsunami warning was issued by the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center, but it later cancelled the alert. 

5. Iran’s semi-official Fars news agency is reporting that the country has temporarily called off a plan to dispatch warships to the Atlantic Ocean. The Sunday report quoted Iran’s navy chief who did not say why Iran changed the plan but said another fleet would be sent to the Atlantic Ocean in the future. 

6. A strong earthquake damaged dozens of houses in western Nicaragua on Thursday, and authorities said that at least 23 people were injured by falling ceilings, beams and walls in one town. 

7. A communist official in China has condemned the rapid growth of Christianity in the region as “excessive”, but has denied allegations of increased persecution. 

8. The United States Air Force commander in charge of the NATO alliance’s military presence in Europe said this week that US troops may soon be deployed to the region as tensions continue to worsen near the border between Ukraine and Russia. 

9. The U.S. Geological Survey reports that a magnitude 4.9 earthquake shook the state of Idaho just after 6 p.m. on Saturday. This is the largest quake to hit Idaho in nearly a decade and the second earthquake in less than a week. Nearly 100 people reported feeling the quake on the USGS website. 

10. Lockheed Martin officially opened a branch in Be’er Sheva in southern Israel on Wednesday, in support of the IDF and the “Move South” campaign funded by the Israeli government. Former Israeli Air Force Brigadier General Shelly Gotman will lead the office, and be the managing director for the company’s Information Systems & Global Solutions business, which services the US government. 

The Bible says in Hebrews 9:28: “So Christ was once offered to bear the sins of many; and unto them that look for him shall he appear the second time without sin unto salvation.” 

Someone asked John Wesley what he would do if he knew his Lord would return at that time the next day. He said, “I would go to bed and go to sleep; wake up in the morning, and go on with my work, for I would want Him to find me doing what He had appointed.”
