PROPHECY BOOTCAMP: The Tribulation (Part 4) from Dr. Tim LaHaye
Daniel 9:27 says, “He [the prince who is to come] shall confirm a covenant with many for one week [a 7-year period]; but in the middle of the week [halfway through the 7-year period] he shall bring an end to sacrifice and offering.” This is obviously a future event, and because it parallels prophetic teachings in 2 Thessalonians and the book of Revelation, most prophecy teachers believe that the Antichrist will be the one who officially begins the Tribulation period by signing a covenant with Israel for seven years. He will then break that covenant in three-and-a-half years (or 42 months), after which the end (the “consummation”) comes: the physical return of Christ to this earth to set up His kingdom.
Some today would have us believe that prophecy was fulfilled in AD 70. They call themselves preterists and suggest that all Bible prophecy has been fulfilled. This is a strange yet growing false theory, and to most who take prophecy literally whenever possible, it is confusing. Some of these preterists claim to be mild preterists, others say they are moderate preterists, and still others call themselves full or complete preterists. These people not only reject the tribulation that is to come, but would also have us believe that the second coming of Christ has already occurred. The easiest way to refute this false teaching is to cite our Lord’s definitive description of the Tribulation in Matthew 24:21.
Obviously, the tragic death of 100,000 to one million Jews that occurred in AD 70 cannot be compared to the torture and massacre of 6 million or more Jews under Adolf Hitler during the Holocaust.
Of course, taking Bible prophecy literally wherever possible would have spared the church from this false teaching that was absent from church history for its first 500 years. When it did surface, it was rarely mentioned until the end of the 19th century.
