The three views we have discussed represent the prevailing views of most Christians who believe that Christ will come prior to the millennial kingdom. It is good to keep in mind that sometimes a difference of opinion is determined by whether you take the prophecies about the Tribulation literally or metaphorically. Since similar tragic events have already happened before in the Old Testament (either in the plagues of Egypt or the judgments of God on Israel and the pagan nations), there is no real reason to reject the idea that the prophesied events should be taken literally and will happen exactly as predicted.

While the proponents of the mid-tribulation and post-tribulation views may appear to have persuasive arguments, I believe that when the Bible is properly understood, we find that it teaches the rapture will occur before the Tribulation.

The mid-tribulational view teaches that the church will go through the first half of the Tribulation period, and that Christ will come in the air to rapture His church and resurrect the dead in Christ in the middle of the seven years, prior to the Great Tribulation or the second three-and-a-half years. Then Christ will come in glory to set up His kingdom.

The post-tribulational view teaches that the church will go through the entire Tribulation, that many church saints will be martyred, and that the Lord will resurrect dead believers up to that point and rapture those who are alive at the time by catching them up to Him as He descends, and then finish His coming to earth in power to set up His Kingdom.

You will note several similarities between these views: the resurrection of the dead, the catching up or rapture of those alive at the time, and the literal coming of Christ to the earth. Even some post-tribulationalists believe there will be a brief time lapse between the rapture and the glorious appearing or second coming of Christ to the earth. The main difference in these views is the timing: When will Christ resurrect the dead saints and rapture His church?

Will the rapture of the church occur before the Tribulation period begins? This question has generated more than its share of heat and not enough light from the Scriptures. Many Christians differ on this subject, which indicates that while Scripture is very clear on the fact that Christ will come again, it is not as clear on whether He will come for His church before, in the middle of, or at the end of the Tribulation.

There are various scriptures used by Christians to support the three major views. You should know your view and be prepared to defend it, but you should not be dogmatic to the point of breaking fellowship with anyone who does not agree with you.

The pretribulational view teaches that Christ will come in the air, resurrect those who died in Christ during the church age, and rapture His church up to be with Him before the Tribulation begins, thus saving believers from “the hour of trial which shall come upon the whole earth.” The world will then go through seven years of tribulation, and then Christ will finish His coming by descending in power and great glory to the earth to set up His millennial kingdom.

PROPHECY BOOTCAMP: “Salvation During the Tribulation” from Dr. Tim LaHaye

The second chapter of Joel clearly answers those critics who argue that when the church is raptured into heaven prior to the Tribulation, the Holy Spirit will be gone and therefore people will not be able to receive salvation. If this were true, how could the multitudes mentioned in Revelation 7 be saved? In the second chapter of the book of Acts, Peter, on the day of Pentecost, quotes the prophet Joel regarding the last days:

“And it shall come to pass in the last days, saith God, I will pour out of my Spirit upon all flesh: and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, and your young men shall see visions, and your old men shall dream dreams: And on my servants and on my handmaidens I will pour out in those days of my Spirit; and they shall prophesy: And I will shew wonders in heaven above, and signs in the earth beneath; blood, and fire, and vapour of smoke: The sun shall be turned into darkness, and the moon into blood, before the great and notable day of the Lord come: And it shall come to pass, that whosoever shall call on the name of the Lord shall be saved.”

The signs mentioned by the prophet Joel did not come to pass on Pentecost, but are instead reserved for the Tribulation. Also, whoever calls on the Lord during this time will be saved. The offer of salvation by grace through faith has not only existed throughout the entire church age, but will extend into the seven-year Tribulation as well. Anyone who has trusted in the name of the Lord since Pentecost has been saved; and the complete fulfillment awaits the Tribulation. God’s mercy can clearly be seen by the fact that He will extend the offer of salvation by faith in Christ to all the inhabitants on earth during the Tribulation.

PROPHECY BOOTCAMP: The Purpose of the Tribulation (Part 2) from Dr. Tim LaHaye

What scoffers and even some Bible teachers overlook is God’s real purpose behind the strategic 7-year period known as the Tribulation. It is God’s way of shaking the earth. Through these 21 judgments, millions will turn to God in faith for safety. Nothing disrupts man’s sense of security like earthquakes and cataclysmic events he has no control over. When those kinds of things happen — just like after the terrorist attacks in New York, Washington, and Pennsylvania on September 11, 2001 — millions will flee to God.

The bottom line is that God will give the human race seven years of trauma to help people make up their minds whether or not to receive His Son by faith so they can enter the millennial kingdom that immediately follows. Apart from Christ, there will be no other way to be saved.

If you take the descriptions in the book of Revelation literally, you are forced to come to the conclusion that no such period of horror has ever before occurred in history. True, this world has known problems, trials, famines, earthquakes, and pestilences, but never have events like these occurred — events of this magnitude. There are countries around the world in which Christians have been martyred in large numbers. Even though they were suffering severe tribulation, they were doing so only in a general sense. They were not in “the great Tribulation.” At no time in world history have we seen all the events described in Revelation come about.
