Palestinians attack plans for Jewish prayer; Locust swarms in Israel (Second Coming Watch Update #346)

1. According to The Times of Israel, Palestinians from across the political spectrum attacked reported Israeli government plans to allow Jewish prayer on Jerusalem’s Temple Mount. On May 8, the Knesset’s Interior Committee, headed by Mi-ri Re-gev, debated the long-standing unofficial ban on Jewish prayer on the Temple Mount, revered as the site of both Jewish temples and currently administered by Muslims.

2. According to NBC News, Israel’s Negev Desert is alive with locusts. Huge swarms of the newly hatched critters have begun marching across the sand, devouring everything in their path. With the help of high-tech irrigation methods, much of Israel’s desert has been transformed into lush farmland that supplies supermarkets across the country with fresh produce. But the swarm of locusts, which locals say is the worst infestation in decades, is threatening crops and farms.

3. According to Reuters, Qatar, which has taken a lead in arming the Syrian opposition, is coordinating with the CIA and has tightened control of the arms flow to keep weapons sent to Syrian rebels out of the hands of al Qaeda-linked Islamist fighters.

4. According to The Associated Press, Russian President Vladimir Putin met Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Tuesday for talks that focused on the situation in Syria, amid concerns that Moscow could soon provide Damascus with advanced missiles. Israeli officials have asked Russia to stop what they say is an imminent delivery of Russian S-300 air defense systems to Syria.

5. According to Fox News, a Lebanese man was sentenced to 300 lashes with a whip and six years in prison for his role in helping a Saudi woman convert to Christianity and flee the kingdom in the latest example of the religious intolerance that grips the region.

The Bible says in 1 Thessalonians 5:23: “And the very God of peace sanctify you wholly; and I pray God your whole spirit and soul and body be preserved blameless unto the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.”

Immigration reform could set up biometric database in U.S. (Second Coming Watch Update #345)

1. According to Wired Magazine, the immigration reform measure the U.S. Senate is currently debating would create a national biometric database of virtually every adult in the U.S., in what privacy groups fear could be the first step to a ubiquitous national identification system. Buried in the more than 800 pages of the bipartisan legislation is language mandating the creation of the innocuously-named “photo tool,” a massive federal database administered by the Department of Homeland Security and containing names, ages, Social Security numbers and photographs of everyone in the country with a driver’s license or other state-issued photo ID.

2. According to Reuters, a militant Palestinian group in Damascus said it is forming combat units to try to recapture Israeli-occupied territory, in particular the Golan Heights, after Syrian President Bashar Assad and Hezbollah said that they would support such operations. The Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine said it was preparing for new operations after nearly 40 years of quiet on the Israel-Syria border.

3. According to Reuters, the United Nations has said that some 800,000 people will require food aid in Niger in the coming months despite a good harvest last year due to problems supplying cereals to markets, which have pushed up prices, and an influx of Malian refugees. The U.N. office for humanitarian coordination said they would need food from now until the start of the rainy season, which is usually in June, July and August.

4. According to The Associated Press, Russia defended its sales of anti-aircraft systems to the regime of Syrian President Bashar Assad, just days after joining forces with the U.S. for a new push to end Syria’s civil war through negotiations. Russian Foreign Minister Ser-gey Lav-rov avoided saying whether those sales included advanced S-300 batteries.

5. According to The Associated Press, Turkey’s prime minister vowed on Sunday that his country won’t be drawn into Syria’s civil war, despite twin car bombings the government believes were carried out by a group of Turks with close ties to pro-government groups in Syria. The bombings left 46 people dead and marked the biggest incident of violence across the border since the start of Syria’s bloody civil war, raising fears of Turkey being pulled deeper into a conflict that threatens to destabilize the region.

The Bible says in 1 Thessalonians 4:15-17: “or this we say unto you by the word of the Lord, that we which are alive and remain unto the coming of the Lord shall not prevent them which are asleep. For the Lord himself shall descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel, and with the trump of God: and the dead in Christ shall rise first: Then we which are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds, to meet the Lord in the air: and so shall we ever be with the Lord.”

“Federal Europe” to be a reality within a few years; Jerusalem mayor says no to Palestinian rule in city (Second Coming Watch Update #343)

1. According to The Telegraph of Great Britain, European Commission president, Jose Manuel Barroso, said a fully fledged federal Europe may seem like “political science fiction” today but will soon become reality for all European Union countries whether inside or outside the euro. He has fanned the flames of British debate over EU membership by insisting that fiscal union in the eurozone will lead to “intensified political union” for all 27 member states. Mr Barroso’s announcement that he will set out plans for a European federation next spring, before elections to the European Parliament in May 2014, will further deepen Conservative divisions over the EU.

2. According to The Times of Israel, Jerusalem’s mayor Nir Bar-kat has ruled out any notion of Palestinian rule in the capital and says it is ‘ridiculous’ that Jews can’t pray on the Temple Mount. In arguably the most candid and forthright interview he has given since winning office in 2008, Bar-kat suggested that if the Palestinians wanted a capital in Jerusalem they could rename Ramallah “Jerusalem” or “northern Jerusalem.” He said, “it was in Jerusalem’s DNA to be a united city, under sole Jewish rule.” He also that he disagrees with the current rule banning Jews from praying on the Temple Mount but said he would not try to change the rule at this point.

3. According to the Washington Times, the Department of Homeland Security said that Middle East and North Africa based criminal hackers are preparing cyberattacks against the websites of high-profile U.S. government agencies, banks and other companies. The department said the attacks, dubbed Operation USA, are set to begin this week. A homeland security bulletin said that “Operation USA poses a limited threat of temporarily disrupting U.S. websites,” defacing websites or temporarily knocking them offline. More dangerous, though, is the developing alliance that the attacks seem to forebode between criminal hackers and violent Islamic extremists.

4. According to The Associated Press, President Bashar Assad’s regime has given a Palestinian militant group the go-ahead to set up missiles to attack Israel in the wake of recent Israeli airstrikes on the Syrian capital. Syria has hinted at possible retribution against Israel since the Jewish state carried out the airstrikes over the weekend, although official government statements have been relatively mild. In that light, the Assad regime’s decision to allow a minor Syria-based Palestinian group to prepare for attacks is largely seen as a face-saving gesture unlikely to escalate the confrontation with Israel. The Syrian government has reportedly told the group that they could carry out attacks independently without consulting Syrian authorities.

5. According to the Associated Press, China launched a peace proposal amid visits from the leaders of Israel and the Palestinian Authority, in a sign of its desire for a larger role in the Middle East. Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas was welcomed by his Chinese counterpart in Beijing on Monday, as Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu began a visit to the eastern financial hub of Shanghai. Netanyahu is due in Beijing on Wednesday following Abbas’s departure a day earlier. During his meeting with Abbas, the Chinese president introduced a 4-point peace proposal. The plan calls for an independent Palestinian state alongside Israel, based on the 1967 lines, with East Jerusalem as its capital. The proposal also states Israel’s right to exist in security and asserts that negotiations are the key to lasting peace between the two peoples.

The Bible says in Philippians 3:20: “For our conversation is in heaven; from whence also we look for the Saviour, the Lord Jesus Christ: Who shall change our vile body, that it may be fashioned like unto his glorious body, according to the working whereby he is able even to subdue all things unto himself.”
