Rocket from Gaza lands in Israel (Second Coming Watch Update #313)

1. According to The Associated Press, a rocket fired from the Gaza Strip struck Israel on Tuesday as tensions are mounting in the region weeks ahead of President Barack Obama’s visit. A police spokesman said remains of the rocket were found south of the city of Ash-ke-lon, in southern Israel. The attack caused damage to a road but no injuries. It was the first such projectile from the Palestinian territory to hit Israel since hostilities ended in a ceasefire last November.

2. According to Agence France Presse, Egyptian opposition leader Mohamed El-Ba-ra-dei warned of chaos in the troubled nation if parliamentary elections go ahead in April, as protesters demonstrated in Cairo against Islamist President Mohamed Morsi. The leading figure in the National Salvation Front coalition said that torture, abductions and a lack of social justice were still blighting Egyptian society. He said that to press ahead in those circumstances risked setting the country on a “road to total chaos and instability.”

3. According to The Associated Press, Iraqis increasingly fear that militants on both sides of the country’s sectarian divide are gearing up for a new round of violence that could undo the fragile gains Iraq has made in recent years. Leaflets from a militant group with ties to Iran have begun showing up at Sunni households demanding that the families leave or face “great agony.” Many Sunnis who received the messages are taking the warnings at face value and considering making a move.
4. According to The Associated Press, futurists have long proclaimed the coming of a cashless society, where dollar bills and plastic cards are replaced by fingerprint and retina scanners smart enough to distinguish a living, breathing account holder from an identity thief. At a college in South Dakota, students are now experimenting with bio-cryp-tology — a mix of biometrics and cryptology — for the processing of financial transactions. Students have already begun purchasing items on campus by typing in their birth date and scanning their fingerprint at the register. Many believe that this type of technology will easily be adopted by other industries.

5. According to Reuters, South Korea’s new president urged North Korea to abandon its nuclear ambitions, and to stop wasting its scarce resources on arms, less than two weeks after the country carried out its third nuclear test. The country’s first female president has yet to decide whether her policy will be to attempt to pay of the North or isolate it further in order to get it to drop its nuclear program.

Jesus Christ said in Mark 13:35-37: “Watch ye therefore: for ye know not when the master of the house cometh, at even, or at midnight, or at the cockcrowing, or in the morning: Lest coming suddenly he find you sleeping. And what I say unto you I say unto all, Watch.”

Violent thunderstorms cause chaos across southern Europe (Second Coming Watch Update #312)

1. According to Euro News, violent thunderstorms and torrential rains have caused chaos across southern Europe. In Italy, much of the Sicilian city of Ca-ta-nia was turned into a raging river with strong waters carrying away vehicles. The situation was worse in Greece where one woman died and dozens of commuters were trapped in their cars after a torrential downpour swamped the capital city of Athens. Power outages darkened large parts of the city, a river broke its banks and traffic jams brought much of Athens to a standstill. Weather reports said that “this is the worst storm since 1961.”

2. According to Reuters, Iran has begun installing advanced centrifuges at its main uranium enrichment plant, a defiant step that worries Western powers ahead of a resumption of talks with Tehran this week. In a confidential report, the IAEA said 180 centrifuges and empty centrifuge casings had been put in place at the facility near the town of Natanz in central Iran. If launched successfully, such machines could enable Iran to significantly speed up its accumulation of material that the West fears will be used to devise a nuclear weapon.

3. According to The Christian Post, Sa-eed A-be-di-ni, the American pastor serving an 8-year prison sentence in Iran, is being pressured by his captors into converting back to Islam, but he says that that will never happen. In a letter obtained by the American Center for Law and Justice, A-be-di-ni said the Iranians will never get him to recant and he expressed his gratitude to the over 260,000 people who have signed a petition calling for his release.

4. According to The Los Angeles Times, much of the western United States continues to struggle with unusually dry conditions, raising the prospect of another year of wildfires, stunted crops and un-navigable stretches of river in various parts of the country. The National Drought Early Warning Outlook report said that more than two-thirds of the country is under abnormally dry to exceptional drought conditions. While the report said the drought was over in most of the nation east of the Mississippi River, the portion of the country still facing drought — most of the West and Florida — should expect it “to persist or intensify.”

5. According to The Telegraph of Great Britain, the Eurozone is expected to stay in a recession for another year. The European Commission painted a gloomy picture of the eurozone’s troubled economy, saying that unemployment is “unacceptably high” and that hiring is expected “to shrink further for some quarters”. Having forecast late last year that the eurozone would grow 0.1 percent this year, it changed its position, forecasting that the 17-nation bloc would shrink 0.3 percent in 2013.

United Arab Emirates leads Gulf nations in building up defenses (Second Coming Watch Update #311)

1. According to Reuters, the United Arab Emirates is at the forefront of a regional push to build up domestic
defense manufacturing capability to reduce reliance on imports that come with too many strings attached. Wary
of non-Arab adversary Iran in a competition for regional predominance, and seeing an increased security threat
from Islamist militants, Gulf Arab monarchies have some of the fastest growing military budgets in the world. The
UAE has begun to pursue more sophisticated, high-tech capabilities in a strategy combining joint ventures with
foreign firms and a program in which deals commit companies to transfer technology and skills to the Emirates.

2. According to the Digital Journal, scientists gathered at this week’s annual meeting of the American Association
for the Advancement of Science in Boston have warned that extreme weather events like Hurricane Sandy and the
extended Texas drought are here to stay. They say that such events are the new normal and will occur in the
future with more intensity and more frequency. The researchers made no forecasts as to the ability of humans to
survive in the face of more extreme weather but they did highlight some historical events pointing to societies that
had failed to adapt to changes in climate.

3. According to The Blaze, four foreigners were detained last week in Benghazi, Libya, on charges of printing and
distributing materials that promote Christianity. The embattled missionaries are from South Africa, South Korea,
Egypt and Sweden, with the latter individual also holding U.S. citizenship. Despite a revolution just two years
ago, it is still illegal to share any faith other than Islam, with the death penalty serving as a potential ramification.
There is no known Christian minority in Libya and this is the first known arrest for missionary work since the
revolution.

4. According to Reuters, Nigeria’s secret service say they have arrested a “terrorist cell” trained in Iran which
planned to attack U.S. and Israeli targets in Africa’s most populous nation. The State Security Service said they
arrested three Nigerians after one of them made several suspicious trips to Iran where he interacted with Iranians
in a “high profile terrorist network”. One member of the group has admitted being paid to spy for Iran. Iran has yet
to respond to the allegations.

5. According to the Times of Israel, Ra-fi Ei-tan, a former high-ranking Mossad official and adviser to former Israeli
prime minister Ariel Sharon, says that Benjamin Netanyahu should await President Obama’s visit with a
diplomatic proposal of unilateral disengagement from the West Bank. Ei-tan said the Prime Minister Sharon was
developing such a plan before he suffered a debilitating stroke in 2006. He said that Israel ‘must disengage from
the Palestinians in the West Bank. We can’t continue occupying a foreign people.’ The pull-out plan, which has
been dubbed “the mosaic separation”, would leave most Israeli settlements intact, allowing isolated Palestinian
villages access to large urban centers through an intricate system of underpasses and tunnels.

Jesus Christ said in Mark 8:38: “Whosoever therefore shall be ashamed of me and of my words in this adulterous
and sinful generation; of him also shall the Son of man be ashamed, when he cometh in the glory of his Father
with the holy angels.”
