Egypt’s army chief warns that country could collapse (Second Coming Watch Update #301)

1. According to The Associated Press, Egypt’s army chief warned of “the collapse of the state” if the political crisis roiling the nation for nearly a week continues. The warning by the chief, who is also the country’s defense minister, were the first comments by the powerful military since the country’s latest crisis began around the second anniversary of Egypt’s uprising. They came days after President Mohammed Morsi placed three cities under a 30-day state of emergency and a night curfew.

2. According to The New York Times, the Pentagon is moving toward a major expansion of its cybersecurity force to counter increasing attacks on the nation’s computer networks, as well as to expand offensive computer operations on foreign adversaries. The expansion would increase the Defense Department’s Cyber Command by more than 4,000 people, up from the current 900. William J. Lynn III, a former deputy defense secretary who worked on the Pentagon’s cybersecurity strategy said, “The threat is real and we need to react to it.”

3. According to The Associated Press, Israel could launch a pre-emptive strike to stop Syria’s chemical weapons from reaching Hez-boll-ah in Lebanon or other terrorist groups. The warning came as the military moved a rocket defense system to a main northern city, and Israel’s premier warned of dangers from both Syria and Iran. Israel has long expressed concerns that Syrian President Bashar Assad could lose control over his chemical weapons.

4. According to The Associated Press, torrential rains have left thousands of homes flooded in eastern Australia, with more rain and high winds expected. The disaster has claimed four lives, including a 3-year-old boy who was hit by a falling tree. The Australian Associated Press said officials were preparing for another day of evacuations along the eastern coast, where hundreds of homes have been cut off by floodwaters.

5. According to the Islamic Republic News Agency, Iranian President Mah-moud Ah-ma-di-ne-jad said that all Muslims should mobilize their resources to uproot Zionism. He made the remarks in his speech to the 26th international conference on Islamic Unity. He also encouraged Muslims around the world to put aside their differences in an effort to defeat the West and Israel.

The Bible says in 1 Peter 1:13: “Wherefore gird up the loins of your mind, be sober, and hope to the end for the grace that is to be brought unto you at the revelation of Jesus Christ.”

Israeli president warns of danger posed by Iran’s nuclear program (Second Coming Watch Update #300)

1. According to The Times of Israel, Israeli President Shimon Peres addressed the World Economic Forum and warned of the danger posed by Iran’s nuclear program — not only to Israel, but to the rest of the international community as well. He said, “Iran wants to rule over the Middle East, and no country wants that to happen. Peres also praised President Obama for leading sanctions against Iran and called on the Arab League to assemble a force to stop the bloodshed in Syria.

2. According to The Jerusalem Post, Jordan’s King Ab-dull-ah II says the two-state solution between Israel and Palestine will only be viable while President Obama is still in office. In his speech to the World Economic Forum, he stated that “The time to take action in the Middle East is now. The two state solution will only last as long as Obama’s term. If it doesn’t happen by then I don’t think it will happen.” He said that the Palestinians must be granted their rights to their own future and called upon the international community to “end this conflict once and for all.”

3. According to Reuters, five people were shot dead in the Egyptian city of Suez during nationwide protests against President Mohamed Morsi on the second anniversary of the uprising that toppled Hosni Mubarak. Another 280 civilians and 55 security personnel were injured in demonstrations fuelled by anger at the president and his Islamist allies in the Muslim Brotherhood. Thousands of protesters massed in Cairo’s Tahrir Square to rekindle the demands of a revolution they say has been hijacked by Islamists who have betrayed its goals.

4. According to Reuters, North Korea threatened to attack rival South Korea if Seoul joined a new round of tightened U.N. sanctions, as Washington unveiled more of its own economic restrictions following North Korea’s rocket launch last month. In a third straight day of fiery rhetoric, the North directed its verbal onslaught at its neighbor saying: “‘Sanctions’ mean a war and a declaration of war against us.”

5. According to Reuters, Britain’s economy shrank more than expected at the end of 2012 with a North Sea oil production slump, lower factory output and a hangover from London’s Olympics pushing it perilously close to a “triple-dip” recession. The news is a blow for Britain’s Conservative-led government, which a day earlier defended its austerity program against criticism from the International Monetary Fund. It needs solid growth to meet its budget targets, keep a triple-A debt rating and bolster its chances of winning a 2015 election.

The Bible says in James 5:7: “Be patient therefore, brethren, unto the coming of the Lord. Behold, the husbandman waiteth for the precious fruit of the earth, and hath long patience for it, until he receive the early and latter rain.”

N. Korea threatens new nuclear test, says rockets are designed to carry warheads (Second Coming Watch Update #299)

1. According to the Associated Press, North Korea’s top governing body warned that the regime will conduct its third nuclear test in defiance of U.N. punishment, and made clear that its long-range rockets are designed to carry not only satellites but also warheads aimed at striking the United States. North Korea’s National Defense Commission denounced the UN resolution condemning the country’s long-range rocket launch as a banned missile activity and expanding sanctions against the regime.

2. According to Reuters, Russia warned Israel and the West against launching military strikes on Iranian nuclear facilities but suggested Tehran should be quicker to cooperate over inspections of its nuclear sites. Speaking at his annual news conference, the Russian Foreign Minister said, “Attempts to prepare and implement strikes on Iranian nuclear facilities and on its infrastructure as a whole are a very, very dangerous idea. We hope these ideas will not come to fruition.”

3. According to The Associated Press, the top commander of Iran’s powerful Revolutionary Guard insists his forces control shipping in the Strait of Hormuz, the gateway for one fifth of the world’s oil. The commander’s remarks, which were posted on the Guard’s website, were apparently aimed at highlighting the Guard’s control of the strategic waterway. Military officials say Iran has a plan to close the Strait but insist that the country’s Supreme Leader would make the final decision.

4. According to Fox News, four American F-16 fighter jets have been sent to Egypt as part of a foreign aid package that critics say should have been scrapped when the nation elected a leader who has called the U.S. President a liar and urged that hatred of Jews be instilled in children. Sixteen F-16s and 200 Abrams tanks are to be given to the Egyptian government before the end of the year under a foreign aid deal signed in 2010 with then-Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak. However, President Morsi’s verbal attacks on the Jewish state and on the United States has caused concern over how the military aid will be used in the future.

5. According to The Associated Press, Palestinians plan to reassure Israel’s public that they are partners for peace, after a strong showing of Israeli moderates in parliament elections ended the domination of hawkish parties. The activists said that a letter with such a message will be sent to Israeli legislators and the media in coming days. Palestinian officials say they are pleasantly surprised by the surge of centrist parties but doubt this will fundamentally alter Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s policies.
