Two dead, thousands evacuated after flooding in eastern Malaysia (Second Coming Watch Update #289)

1. According to The Associated Press, flooding sparked by heavy seasonal rains has killed two people and forced nearly 16,000 to flee their homes on Malaysia’s east coast. Authorities have evacuated residents of numerous villages and towns to higher ground in three Malaysian states that are prone to torrential rains between November and February. Flood monitoring centers said thousands of people were living in schools, community halls and other relief centers.

2. According to The Times of Israel, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu stated that Israel will do everything in its power to prevent a Syrian chemical weapons attack on the nation. He spoke a day after reports emerged that he had met with Jordan’s king to discuss a preemptive strike on Syria’s chemical arsenal.

3. According to Channel News Asia, Arab countries are revisiting the idea of a single currency as a way of reviving their economies. The recent unrest in the Middle East has left many Arab countries’ economies struggling and fragmented, and as governments focus on reconstruction and rebuilding, the idea of a single Arab currency is being spearheaded by the Arab Importers and Exporters Union. While a single currency will free up trade between Gulf nations and nations in the Middle East, experts say that the region needs to complete other steps leading to greater fiscal integration before a single currency can be implemented.

4. According to The Associated Press, Nicaraguan authorities say they have ordered the evacuation of some 300 families living on the flanks of the country’s highest volcano after it began spewing hot gas and ash this week. Fifteen eruptions had been recorded within a 24-hour period. Authorities said that larger eruptions could occur and they wanted to move the closest residents away from the volcano as a precaution.

5. According to Reuters, Iran has stated that it would allow U.N nuclear inspectors into a military base they suspect was used for atomic weapons-related work, if threats against the Islamic Republic are dropped. The International Atomic Energy Agency believes that Iran conducted explosives tests with possible nuclear applications at Par-chin, a sprawling military base southeast of Tehran, and has repeatedly asked to inspect it. Western diplomats, however, accuse Iran of carrying out extensive work to clean the site of any evidence of nuclear work.

The Bible says in Mark 13:26-27: “And then shall they see the Son of man coming in the clouds with great power and glory. And then shall he send his angels, and shall gather together his elect from the four winds, from the uttermost part of the earth to the uttermost part of heaven.”

Senior Hamas leader calls for suicide bombing campaign against Israel (Second Coming Watch Update #288)

1. According to the Jerusalem, Post, a senior Hamas leader called for the resumption of suicide bombings against Israel. The demand came in response to the government’s recent decision to approve the construction of hundreds of housing units in east Jerusalem. The director of the Jerusalem Department of Hamas said that armed Palestinian groups should initiate a confrontation with Israel over its plans to build new apartments in Jerusalem and its suburbs. He stated that the Palestinians should resort to various methods of resistance, including “martyrdom operations in the heart of Israel.”

2. According to The Times of Israel, while legislative scholars and political pundits continue to debate the exact meaning of the upgrade of the Palestinians to a nonmember observer state, the United Nations last week officially changed the way it refers to the body: it is now the “State of Palestine,” as opposed to merely “Palestine.” The name change is based on an opinion by the UN’s legal department. On a symbolic level, the decision will likely boost aspirations of Palestinian leaders who hope their newly gained status will help them establish a full-fledged independent state.

3. According to Reuters, a major winter storm system swept through the southern United States on Christmas Day, spawning tornadoes in several states and killing three people in weather-related road accidents. The National Weather Service said a tornado struck Mobile, Alabama, home to about 200,000 people. There were reports of damage to trees and widespread power outages, along with some structural damage, but no injuries or fatalities. Tornadoes also touched down in Mississippi, Texas and Louisiana, flattening houses and causing some injuries.

4. According to the Times of Israel, the Iranian navy is to begin a week of maneuvers by the end of December that will include the testing of new weapons, combat simulations and electronic warfare. An Iranian Navy Commander was quoted as saying that the war games would also involve Iranian-produced drones, submarines, two new hovercraft and destroyers. According to the regime-sanctioned Press TV, the Iranian navy has been increasing its presence in international waters to defend naval routes and provide security for Iranian tankers and merchant ships.

5. According to the International Business Times, Human Rights Watch accused Palestinian militants in Gaza of war crimes for intentionally targeting Israeli civilians with rockets during last month’s clashes after Israel assassinated a top Hamas leader. Sarah Whitson, the organization’s Middle East director stated: “Palestinian armed groups made clear in their statements that harming civilians was their aim. There is simply no legal justification for launching rockets at populated areas.”

The Bible says in Matthew 24:36-39: “But of that day and hour knoweth no man, no, not the angels of heaven, but my Father only. But as the days of Noah were, so shall also the coming of the Son of man be. For as in the days that were before the flood they were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, until the day that Noe entered into the ark, And knew not until the flood came, and took them all away; so shall also the coming of the Son of man be.”

Christianity in the Middle East ‘close to the brink of extinction’ (Second Coming Watch Update #287)

1. According to the Telegraph, Christianity is ‘on the brink of extinction’ in the Middle East. Because of mounting persecution of worshippers a new report states that Christianity faces being wiped out of the “biblical heartlands.” The study warns that Christians suffer greater hostility across the world than any other religious group. And it claims that politicians have been “blind” to the extent of violence faced by Christians in Africa, Asia and the Middle East and especially the threat of militant Islam.

2. According to The Times of Israel, Gaza terrorists attempted to fire a rocket at Israel on Sunday. The Kassam missile landed in an open area in the Gaza Strip, causing no injuries or damage. The rocket fire is a breach of the Egyptian-mediated ceasefire signed by Hamas on November 21st ending Israel’s Operation Pillar of Defense. As part of the deal, Hamas agreed to halt its own fire and rein in other terror groups.

3. According to The Guardian, this month’s rocket launch by North Korea shows it has probably developed the technology to fire a warhead more than 6,200 miles, theoretically putting the US west coast in range of its weapons. North Korea said the launch on December 12th put a weather satellite in orbit, but critics say it was aimed at nurturing the kind of technology needed to mount a nuclear warhead on a long-range missile.

4. According to the Jerusalem Post, Hamas leader Kha-led Ma-shaal instructed the terror group’s sleeper cells in the West Bank to prepare themselves for armed struggle to take control of the Palestinian territory. According to the report which cited the Israeli Security Agency and the Aman military intelligence service, Hamas, at the behest of Iran, was preparing to seize power in the West Bank as it did in Gaza in a 2007 civil war.

The sanctions, agreed upon in October, entered EU law with their publication in the European Union’s Official Journal. The toughest EU measures yet include bans on financial transactions, sales to Iran of shipping equipment and steel, and imports of Iranian natural gas.

The Bible says in Matthew 16:27: “For the Son of man shall come in the glory of his Father with his angels; and then he shall reward every man according to his works.”

Al Qaeda staging a comeback in Syria (Second Coming Watch Update #286)

1. According to Reuters, having seen its star wane in Iraq, Al Qaeda has staged a comeback in neighbouring Syria, posing a dilemma for the opposition fighting to remove President Assad and making the West balk at military backing for the revolt. The rise of Al Qaeda’s affiliate in Syria, which the United States designated a terrorist organisation last week, could usher in a long and deadly confrontation with the West, and perhaps even Israel. Members of the group say their aim is to revive the Islamic Caliphate.

2. According to The Times of Israel, one of President Obama’s closest Middle East advisers said the standoff over Iran’s nuclear program is headed for a critical point next year. Dennis Ross, a former special envoy to the Middle East, said, “When you look at where we are today, I’d say that 2013 is going to be the decisive year — one way or another.” Ross also called on Israelis and Palestinians to take concrete steps to restore confidence in a two-state solution.

3. According to The Associated Press, the head of the United Nations and all members of the Security Council except the United States criticized Israel on this week and demanded an immediate halt to new settlement construction. Representatives of the 14 council members stepped to the microphone outside the council chamber after its monthly Mideast briefing to denounce the Israeli settlement plans, which they warned are threatening a two-state settlement with the Palestinians. The move was clearly aimed at intensifying pressure on Israel and demonstrating the isolation of the United States on the issue.

4. According to ABC News, a pastor from Boise, Idaho, is being held in Iran without charge. He has been imprisoned, since September, in the notoriously brutal Evin Prison. Rev. Sa-eed A-be-di-ni was born in Iran but is now a U.S. citizen, and is being held captive for his work as a Christian missionary. He traveled to Iran this summer to continue humanitarian efforts, help build an orphanage, and continue leading a house church movement which has spread to over 30 cities in the country.

5. According to Reuters, most American states are not prepared for major natural and health disasters. Two nonprofit groups have released an analysis of the ability of hospitals, health departments and other state organizations to prevent and respond to emergencies ranging from bioterrorism to influenza outbreaks to catastrophic weather. Thirty-five states met fewer than seven of 10 benchmarks. Jeffrey Levi, president of the Trust for America’s Health, “We have not paid sufficient attention to the everyday threats” such as influenza, food poisoning and extreme weather.

The Bible says in 1 Thessalonians 5:3: “For when they shall say, Peace and safety; then sudden destruction cometh upon them, as travail upon a woman with child; and they shall not escape.”
