UN says Southern Africa food shortages worsen. According to the Associated Press, the United Nations deputy humanitarian chief says food shortages are “a chronic problem” in southern Africa and more than 5.5 million people in eight countries need aid this year, a 40 percent increase compared to 2011. Catherine Bragg, winding up a five-day southern Africa trip, said worsening food shortages are the result of drought or floods and rising world food prices. Food shortages are particularly acute in Zimbabwe, Lesotho, Malawi and Swaziland.
Iran says Israel can expect more drone incursions. According to the Jerusalem Post, Mohammed Naqdi the head of Iran’s Basij militia said that Israel can expect more drone infiltrations into its airspace in the future. The IAF shot down a small unmanned aerial vehicle as it flew over southern Israel earlier this month, in one of the most flagrant violations of the nation’s airspace in years. Naqdi told reporters, “Zionists must expect hundreds of other drones in 25 different models with new flying systems that they won’t know how to confront.”
France says Iran seems on track for nukes by mid-2013. According to the Associated Press, France’s foreign minister says Iran appears on track to reach the ability to produce a nuclear weapon by the first half of next year. Laurent Fabius told Europe-1 radio that unspecified experts “have established in an absolutely indisputable way” that Iran has compiled a full array of centrifuges that “apparently will allow the ability to go toward possession of the nuclear weapon by the first half of next year, the end of the first half.”
