According to The Jerusalem Post, Israeli Defense Minister Ehud Barak reiterated that Israel is ready for any challenge, but cautioned it cannot rely on anyone but itself. Speaking at a memorial service for the 1973 Yom Kippur War’s victims, Barak stated: “The region around us is alight.” The IDF and security forces, however, “are ready for any challenge, be it near or far.”
Three hundred people in Syria have reportedly been killed in a single day. According to Reuters, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said that more than 300 people were killed in Syria in one of the bloodiest days in the 18-month uprising against President Bashar al-Assad. World leaders meeting at the United Nations have expressed concern at the continuing violence in Syria but are deadlocked over their response to the conflict, which the Observatory says has claimed 30,000 lives since March 2011.
Thousands of British residents face more flooding. According to the BBC, floodwater is subsiding across much of the UK, following the most intense September storm in 30 years. In England and Wales, there are over 25 flood warnings and over 30 flood alerts. Heavy rainfall over the past three days has affected many areas of the country with about 570 homes and businesses flooded across England and Wales and over 400 properties flooded in the Yorkshire area.
