The U.S. sends warships and marines to Libya. According to the Associated Press, two U.S. warships and a special unit of roughly 50 members of the Marine Corps are being stationed off of Libya’s coast following an attack on the U.S. embassy compound in Ben-gha-zi. One destroyer, the USS Laboon, had “moved to a position off the coast” by Wednesday, and the USS McFaul was said to be arriving “within days.” The ships are equipped with the Aegis Combat System and are loaded with Tomahawk cruise missiles.
The West Nile outbreak is still set to break records. According to MedPage Today, the West Nile virus epidemic peaked some time in August, although the number of cases continue to increase because of lags in detection and reporting. As of this week, the Centers for Disease Control had received reports of 2,636 cases of West Nile virus, with 118 deaths. The virus has been detected in humans in all but five states and has been found in humans, birds, or mosquitoes in every state except Hawaii and Alaska.
A new report says that the United States is vulnerable to long-range missile attacks. According to Space Daily, experts say that the United States could be vulnerable to attack from long-range ballistic missiles unless the government overhauls the country’s “fragile” missile defense system. The findings from the non-partisan National Research Council are highly critical of President Obama’s missile defense strategy, which focuses on protecting Europe from shorter-range Iranian missiles, and calls for more emphasis to be placed on shielding the United States against long-range threats.
